Freshman Retention Rate

As many as 1 in 3 first-year students won’t make it back for sophomore year. The reasons run the gamut from family problems and loneliness to academic struggles and a lack of money. If schools you’re considering have a low freshman retention rate, you’ll want to ask the admissions office why. Some colleges do a great job of taking care of their freshmen; some don’t. Orientation can go only so far in making freshmen feel connected. Many schools, such as those below, now build into the curriculum first-year seminars or other programs that bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff on a regular basis.
