Johnny是武汉新南预科武汉校区学术英语教师，来自遥远的英国，曾就读于曼彻斯特大学，也曾在澳大利亚蒙纳士大学担任讲师，机缘之下来到武汉，成为了武汉新东方前途出国的外教老师，现担任新南威尔士大学国际预科武汉校区的学术英语教师。他说他很难在同一个地方生活太久，于是走遍多国，辗转多个城市，但在武汉找到了他向往的归属感。这是为什么呢？我们一起走进Johnny

深度访谈

My name is Johnny. I'm originally from England, London is my hometown. I went to the University of Manchester, UK, where I studied linguistics in English language. I've been living in Wuhan for several years now. 我叫约翰尼。我来自英国，伦敦是我的家乡。我毕业于英国曼彻斯特大学英语语言学。我已经在武汉生活了好几年。

1、您为什么来到武汉？Why did you come to Wuhan?

I had been living in London for so many years, and I wanted to experience life in a new country. I wanted to get away and see the world, and I thought that China would be a really exciting, interesting, colourful place. And I didn't know much about China at the time, but I'm really glad I chose Wuhan, because I think the food here is great, the people are very friendly, and it's actually a surprisingly welcoming city to foreigners.

我曾经在伦敦生活了很多很多年，我想在一个新的国家体验新的生活，我想离开家乡看看世界。我认为中国是一个非常令人兴奋、有趣、丰富多彩的地方。当时我对中国了解不多，但是我真的很高兴我选择了武汉，因为我认为这里的食物很棒，这里的人们非常热情好客，武汉真的是一个对外国人非常友好的城市。

2、在武汉新东方前途出国工作的感受如何？How do you feel about working abroad in Wuhan New Oriental Vision?

I actually love my job here. I think the team, my colleagues that I work with are all excellent, extremely welcoming. And they make me feel like part of the team, even though I'm different. I know that I'm not a local person, but when we have a job to do, we all work together and I think we get really good results for our customers and our students. In addition, I find it genuinely rewarding to help so many students prepare for overseas education and help them receive the offers that they truly deserve.

我很喜欢这里的工作。我认为我的团队和同事都很优秀，非常热情，他们让我觉得自己是团队的一员，尽管我是与众不同的。我知道我不是本地人，但是当我们有工作要做的时候，我们会一起协作，我认为我们为我们的客户和学生带来了很好的结果。此外，帮助这么多学生为出国留学做好准备，帮助他们获得录取真的让我很有成就感。

3、在新南预科授课的感受如何？How do you feel about teaching at UNSW Foundation Program?

I find teaching on the UNSW Foundation program thoroughly rewarding, simply because you get to see the students’ growth. When we meet them in the 1st week, they may have the ingredients, they may have the language skills, but we give them the tools to be successful in overseas universities. So the transition watching them grow from week one in the 1st semester through to the final week of the 2nd semester is really, really rewarding.

我发现在新南预科教学非常有意义，因为你可以看到学生的成长。当我们初次见到他们的时候。他们具备一些天赋和语言技能，我们会教授给他们在海外学习的技能。我们见证了他们从第一学期开学到最终毕业时的改变，这一切都是值得的，令我非常有成就感。

4、在授课过程中有令您印象深刻的事情吗? 为什么？What impressed you most?

I think I would have to say the speed at which most students adapt to the all English speaking environment. Often students feel shy on day one. It makes me feel really proud to see them by the end of the year. Giving presentations, using academic vocabulary, writing detailed academic essays. I think that's what impresses me most is the speed at which students can adapt and grow in this program.

我不得不说同学们适应全英语环境的速度让我印象深刻。学生们通常在第一天时因为害羞不敢说话。到课程结束时，他们的成长让我感到非常自豪。他们学会了做演讲，使用学术词汇，写学术论文。我觉得最让我印象深刻的是学生们在这个项目中适应和成长的速度。

5、您认为新南预科课程有哪些优势？What do you think the advantages of this program?

Okay, there's a really wide range of benefits. I think, primarily learning how to structure an academic paper, how to plan, how to find academic sources and evaluate their validity，and then synthesise those sources into one coherent piece of work. So the student can support their own opinions with academic information. I think that's a huge benefit, because it's a fundamental skill that all university students need. And through that process, I think students will naturally improve their critical thinking skills, which are hugely important in any university in the world and in life generally. And obviously, communication skills, having the confidence to voice their opinions in class and in academic papers, I think it will not only benefit them when they go to university, but also in their working life, later after they graduate from college.

我认为有很多好处。首先是学习如何组织学术论文，如何寻找学术资源并评估其有效性，然后将这些资源综合成一篇连贯的文章。这样学生就学会利用学术资源来支持自己的观点。我认为这对学生来说是一个巨大的益处，因为这是所有大学生都需要的基本技能。通过这个过程，我认为学生们也会自然的提高他们的批判性思维能力，这也在世界上任何一所大学和生活中都是非常重要的。另外我认为，沟通技巧，在课堂上和学术课题中自信地表达观点的能力，不仅对他们上大学有益，而且对他们毕业后的工作生活也有好处。

6、您认为中国学生在进入新南预科课程时会有哪些困难呢？What difficulties do you think Chinese students may have in this program?

There will be difficulties for students of all levels, no matter if they feel they're pretty weak at English or quite advanced at English. First of all, I think it's quite a quick adjustment to an all English speaking classroom. We don't use any Chinese in the class, and this sometimes for the first one or two weeks. This can be a shock to some students. But after some time, they become more comfortable and more confident in their speaking and listening abilities in class. And secondly, the academic skills which we teach to equip them to be successful in overseas universities. Some of them may be new to students, so things like referencing, how to find academic sources, how to structure an academic paper. Some of these are new skills, but after practice and a lot of effort, students slowly become more comfortable with these abilities.

对于不同的学生来说，无论他们觉得自己的英语水平不足或是很好，都会遇到一些挑战。首先，学生需要快速地适应全英课堂。我们在课堂上不用中文，同学们可能需要一两周的时间来适应。这对有些同学们来说可能会是一个较大的冲击，但一段时间后，他们在课堂上的口语和听力能力变得更加自信。其次，我们教授的学术技能来为在海外大学学习做铺垫。其中一些可能对学生来说是全新的技能，比如参考资料，如何找到学术资料，如何组织学术论文。这些虽然是新的技能，但经过反复的练习和努力，学生慢慢地能够熟练掌握这些技巧。

7、您的学生对您的课程有什么样的反馈？What kind of feedback do you receive from your students about the course

Generally, I would say very positive feedback from the students. That doesn't mean that it's always easy for them, but it means that where they may find it hard when it's around exam season, or they may find it challenging when they have to submit that essay or deliver that presentation. When they get to the end of the year and they look back and reflect on what they've achieved, they realize how valuable these skills will be going forward.

总的来说，我收到的反馈都是非常积极的。这并不意味着他们认为课程很容易，当考试季临近时，他们可能会觉得很难，或者当他们必须提交论文或发表演讲时，他们可能会觉得很有挑战性。当他们到年底回顾反思他们所取得的成就时，他们就会意识到这些技能在未来是多么有价值。

8、新南预科的课程在您看来可以给孩子带来哪些收获呢？In your opinion, what benefits can this program bring to the students

So the main goal of the course is to give students the tools they need to feel confident in their abilities in any subject that they study. Because they need not only English speaking, reading, writing and listening skills, but they need to know how to apply academic tools to their major when they are writing papers or delivering presentations. So in addition to those core skills that we teach them, we are always on hand to go the extra mile if they need help. We are always there via email, Wechat. We have office hours each week to meet with students one on one. If they're having troubles or feeling confused about things, we're always there to help solve their problems.

课程的主要目标是为学生提供所需的工具，让他们对自己在所学任何学科的能力感到自信。因为他们不仅需要英语口语、阅读、写作和听力技能，还需要知道在写论文或做报告时如何将学术工具应用到他们的专业。因此，除了教给他们这些核心技能外，如果他们需要帮助，我们总是随时准备提供额外的帮助。我们也会通过电子邮件、微信交流。我们每周都有办公时间与学生一对一地见面，如果他们有麻烦或对事情感到困惑。我们总是可以随时帮助他们解决问题。
