首先最重要的是学术角度的弥补。GPA虽然是重要的硬性指标，但软性背景方面也是学校录取的一项重要参考。
针对这位同学的情况，我们主要从科研项目和实习入手。在大三寒假的时候，我们建议并指导了这位同学申请美国的暑期研究。相比国内，美国高校的科研经历以及导师推荐信会更受申请学校认可，从而也可以给他申请加分不少。很幸运的是这位同学最后成功拿到了密歇根大学安娜堡分校统计系的暑期研究机会，并在期间表现优秀，得到了老师的好评并顺利拿到推荐信。这段经历弥补了这位同学的科研空白，为他的背景加分不少。
其次是不放弃任何GPA提升的机会。大三的专业课很密集，在此基础上如果能做出提升，会对申请帮助很大。幸运的是这位同学最后表现很好，在多门专业课上获得了A。
最后是合理的选校策略和文书方面个人优势体现。不同学校对GPA的要求标准不一致，对此我们参考了新东方的案例数据库，选择出了最适合这位同学的学校。 此外, 以上种种这位同学的努力，都需要从文书层面展现给学校，是学校了解这位同学的第一渠道。如何将他的个人经历串联起来，分清主次，把这位同学更好地展示给学校，是很重要的。

Self-challenge often drives me forward and I do enjoy the feeling of achieving challenging goals. To further my understanding in statistics practically, I applied for a position in Prof. Ji Zhu’s research group at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (located in Michigan, USA). There I mainly got involved in a research project of developing a college/high school ranking system. My role was to use Python for data crawling, data cleaning, data preprocessing, and modeling analysis. By observing the characteristics of the data, I washed away the huge erroneous data. And by regularizing the data and building dummy variables, I ended up improving the accuracy and interpretability of the data. To expand my knowledge and skills in this field, I also conducted much reference reading. Besides, this summer experience exposed me to a totally different academic atmosphere in a top university in the U.S. I attended a lot of seminars and campus events to learn US culture and gain interaction with students from other countries. The profound culture and free atmosphere were impressive, which decided me to pursue further study there. For me, a personalized, practical and reflective learning experience is exactly what I need right now at this stage of my life.
